Senses, Brain, and Spaces Workshop

8-9 March, 2007

University of Salford Think Lab

This workshop brings together people at the forefront of cognitive science, neuroscience, and sensory perception research, as well as experts on building use. Designers making an original contribution to the way we view our environment are also invited to engage in a discourse on the multiple factors involved in the holistic sensation of spaces experienced by individuals. The outcomes of the workshop will be developed into a landmark statement to serve as a springboard for models that can improve the theory and practice of optimising built spaces to improve well-being and the achievement of full human potential. This will provide a dynamic basis for creative new directions in building research.

This event will bring together around thirty invited international experts. It is being hosted by Professor Peter Barrett in collaboration with Dr John Zeisel and Professor Jacqueline Vischer. We believe that this innovative event will link a wide variety of expertise and using the dynamic environment of the Think Lab will facilitate creative responses to the issues that space brings. For brief details of the Think Lab see http://www.thinklab.salford.ac.uk.

We anticipate a combination of brief individual presentations to instigate discussion. The emphasis will be on group interaction and moderated panel exchanges.
